In recent months, there has been a lot of media attention regarding the lack of clarity about charging rates. On January 2, the NRC published an article about charging rates, and on Saturday February 15 2020, BNNVARA’s Kassa program broadly discussed the structure of charging rates and the lack of clarity. So, it is time for a change (Misschien beter; So, it is time for certainty/transparency)

The accumulation of rates leads to confusion

Prices differ per MSP, per charge point, per city or even per province. Some charge point rates are changed during the day and depend on the number of occupied charge points in the area. In short, there is much to do in the area of transparency. With the current lack of clarity in the field of charging rates, many electric drivers can be misled, and potential new electric drivers will discouraged to charge their vehicle publicly.

What do I pay for a charging session?

The charge rate starts with the charge point operator. This operator sets the rate, and can consist of a kWh rate, a start rate and a time rate. In municipalities, agreements have often been made to make prices for charging an electric car attractive. For example, Allego, which has a charge rate of € 0.18 / kWh in the municipality of Gelderland / Overijssel.

Charge card: different rates

To start a charging session, you need a charge card. The charge card provider asks for a monthly payment or a variable rate per charge session. However, some charge card providers also charge a fixed fee per kWh. Meaning that, besides the amount of for instance,  € 0.36 / kWh incl. VAT an additional starting rate may apply. Easy, because you always know what you pay for a charging session, but what if the charge point in your street costs only € 0.20 / kWh? Or if there are charge points at your work with a rate of € 0.18 / kWh so that you can charge cheaply? Then you pay € 0.16 per kWh more. On a charge of 20kWh this can already amount to a difference of €3.20. E-Flux offers a charge card where the rates set by the charge point operator and are billed one-on-one, this is what we call transparency.

E-Flux offers a fair charge card with transparent rates

E-Flux wants to make a difference in this market. That is why E-Flux offers clear and fair charging solutions from day 1:

  • Charge card with fixed plan: as an electric driver you pay € 2.95 per month incl. VAT. We invoice the charging costs directly from the charging station operator, without surcharges. A kWh rate of €0.18 is really € 0.18.
  • Charge card without fixed costs: especially for electric drivers who do not often charge publicly, we have a free charge card with a variable rate of € 0.15 incl. VAT per charging session. Do you charge the car 10 times a month? Then you will receive an invoice with the charging costs charged to us by the charge point operator, and the costs for using the charging card. In this case € 1.50 incl. VAT.

Charge point: roaming storage

A charge point operator is responsible for managing the charge point. Every month the charge point operator sends an overview of the charge sessions with an invoice to the relevant charge card providers. The operator charges a roaming fee for the debtor risk, the extra handling and the maintenance of the technical roaming connection. This varies from kWh rate (often from € 0.07 per kWh) or a percentage of the kWh price (up to 8% of the kWh price) and ensures that the price that you ultimately pay as an electric driver is higher. Do you use a charge card issued by the same company as the charge point operator? Then you do not pay the storage. To keep charging attractive, E-Flux has opted for low roaming storage towards other charge card providers of € 0.02 / kWh that is never charged to the charge point owner. Do you have an E-Flux charge point at your office, and do you set € 0.25 / kWh? Then E-Flux will also pay this. We have made an illustration in which we show how the price can differ due to the roaming fees and by using a charge card with a different tariff structure.
